3D Printing: Amazon and Staples Help Promote Printing Technology

By Dick Weisinger

Global shipments of 3D printers is expected to increase by 75 percent in 2014 and then in 2014 it is expected to double.  By 2030 Strategy Analytics conservatively predicts that the 3D printing industry can become a $70 billion per-year industry.

A report from Tech Pro Research finds that 31 percent of businesses have actively started using 3D printing or plan to start using it within the next 12 months.  29 percent of businesses are evaluating the technology but have yet to come up with a plan for how to use it.  40 percent say that at this point they still have no interest in the topic.

Pete Basiliere, research director at Gartner, said that “the 3D printer market has reached its inflection point.  While still a nascent market, with hype outpacing the technical realities, the speed of development and rise in buyer interest are pressing hardware, software and service providers to offer easier-to-use tools and materials that produce consistently high-quality results…  Major multinational physical and online retailers have the means to market the technology to consumers and enterprise buyers, generating demand for the devices and revenue by selling printers and supplies, as well as from sales of individual 3D-printed pieces.  Office superstore Staples is already in the market, and other superstores and consumer goods retailers, such as Yamada Denki, are prime candidates to sell printers and finished 3D printed items. Their presence in the market will have an impact on average selling prices, forcing providers into low-margin sales of consumer 3DP by 2017.”   Amazon introduced their on-line 3D printing store last month.
