3D Printing: Enabling Rapid Product Creation and Small Runs of Highly Custom Products

By Dick Weisinger

Use of 3D printing, also known as additive manufacturing, is ramping up quickly based on a report by Sculpteo, a 3D printing company.  68 percent of current users of 3D printing are planning to increase their spending in 2015, and 44 percent say that they’ll be spending more.

The report notes that the results of the report “suggest that not only is investment in additive manufacturing growing across all sectors, but it also seems to be a source of growth unto itself, as the growth in investment has been consistent from one year to the next.”

The Sculpteo report identified twelve factors that explain the strong interest and growth being seen in the 3D printing market.  These include things like new markets, materials, price, innovation, and efficiency.  And among those factors, the themes that were identified to occur frequently in survey responses were 3D metal printing, 3D capture tools (scanners, smartphones), and higher-precision printers.

In looking to the future, those surveyed felt that the two primary features that will make the technology attractive over the next five years are the ability to rapidly create new products and the ability to make limited run and highly custom products.
