Infrastructure and Operations: Evolving to Keep Pace

By Dick Weisinger

The enterprise I&O team (Infrastructure and Operations) team are responsible for administering and managing the technology, information and data for a business. This includes things like servers, networking, storage, data, software applications, security, and cloud services. Responsibilities include policies, testing, running installs and upgrades, and performing repairs.

A Gartner seminar in December 2020 identified six major trends happening among I&O teams:

  • Access from Anywhere. Employees are increasingly working from home. I&O needs to be able to support decentralized business activities.
  • Optimizing Infrastructure. I&O needs to optimize cost and IT resources and provide simple solutions to complex business problems.
  • Automated Continuous Service Delivery. I&O needs to be able to function efficiently even when its members are dispersed.
  • Modernization. I&O needs to keep pushing modernization. The result is lower technical debt and more agile infrastructure.
  • Distributed Cloud Model. I&O needs to become more efficient by relying on external cloud infrastructure. The cloud provides more flexibility and reduced latency.
  • Hire Needed Skills. I&O needs to identify, prioritize and hire for skills that are needed.
