Enterprise Software: Need for Stronger Links Between Project Management and ERP
Technology and competition has caused the length of product life cycles to continually compress. Innovation and technology advances are leading the way for making this happen, but part of the success also goes to better project management. Improved software for managing projects has enabled companies to better contain their costs, manage their staff hours, and control inventory and business assets.
But a new survey by IFS North America found that while project management software has been a great tool for manufacturers, there is still quite a bit of room for improvement. One problem area currently is that project management tools are often disconnected from Enterprise software. For example, only a little less than a quarter of manufacturing companies use project management solutions that have integration points with their ERP systems. Instead, most manufacturers are managing their projects with stand-alone tools like Microsoft Project or Excel.
The amount of project-based manufacturing will only be increasing in the future. A tighter integration of project management with ERP software would allow manufacturers to get real-time insight into and better control over their projects, and can even allow them to treat their entire business as a project.
“As project management becomes a more and more central discipline for manufacturers of all types, we feel that project management needs to be a built-in part of ERP. Custom integration projects are expensive and risky, so implementing standard software that meets project management needs with few to no modifications will be an appealing option to our customers and prospective customers,” said Cindy Jaudon, President and CEO of IFS North America.
