ECM: RoadMap to ECM Success

By Dick Weisinger

AIIM deserves a lot of credit for their work in educating both customers and vendors of ECM technology.  They try to target a wide spectrum of job categories, ranging from Business Managers to Regulatory Staff, Solution Providers and Records Managers.  AIIM offers two certificate programs, one for Enterprise Content Management, and the other for Electronic Records Management.

The ECM Certificate Program covers strategies, tools and technologies used to capture, store, manage, preserve and deliver information in business processes.

The ERM Certificate Program covers topics related to Records Management as it pertains to both public and private sector.

Their “Why ECM?” series is covered in 14 online modules or can be taken at 2-day training classes.  The classes cover concepts like electronic document management, collaboration, business process management, and electronic records management.

But beyond training, AIIM also often develops no-cost educational materials.  For example, they frequently create posters that capture key concepts and ideas about ECM.  One poster that they’ve recently published is called 12 Steps to ECM Success — Best Practice for Implementing ECM.  It can be downloaded for free in PDF format.  And there’s an upcoming AIIM-sponsored Webinar (April 25th) to discuss the concepts outlined on the poster.

12 Steps to ECM Success

The 12 steps outlined on the poster are as follows:

  1. ECM Program and Project Management
  2. Information Governance Framework
  3. Concept of Operations
  4. Information Survey
  5. Business Case
  6. Business & System Requirements
  7. Business Classification Scheme
  8. Users and User Involvement
  9. IT Infrastructure
  10. Model Offices & Pilots
  11. Roll-Out
  12. Post Implementation
