SaaS: Commercial Vendors Pressured by SaaS

New results from InformationWeek echo a number of similar surveys with findings that SaaS is a serious contender against traditional commerical software.  Microsoft, Oracle and SAP are all moving to the defense.

The IW survey asked 250 IT professionals questions about if and how they are using SaaS.  55% of them are in companies with revenues of more than $100 million and 33% of them have more than $1 billion in revenue — so not just SMBs.  Here are some of the responses:

  • 29% use at least one subscription-based service hosted by a vendor
  • 64% are buying or considering buying software via a subscription
  • 69% say a major reason that they chose SaaS was because of ease of deployment
  • 87% of those not using SaaS cite security as the major reason for not doing so
