PLM: Accenture Prepares for a World with Products of Greater Complexity and Higher Density of Technology

Accenture, a global managing consulting company, recently has been loading up on Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) technologies.

In late November last year, Accenture purchased the Hungarian industrial and embedded software development and services Evopro.
in October, Accenture acquired PCO Innovation, a consultancy specializing in PLM strategy and process, application architecture, system implementation, data migration and application management.
In August, Accenture acquired the PRION Group, a leading consulting and systems integrator specializing in Siemens PLM Software.

Manufacturing is increasingly becoming more complex and more automated.   The components used to build a single product may come from many different sources, and the density of technology that’s embedded into products is increasing.  Accenture sees a trend and is building the infrastructure to be able to support it and their manufacturing clients.

Sergio Colella, senior managing director at Accenture, said that “there is a greater demand to integrate product and service development processes across disciplines from innovation to manufacturing, supply chain and customer service.”

Jean-Laurent Poitou, senior managing director at Accenture, said that “for many of our clients, competitive differentiation depends on innovation and time to market, so improving their PLM solution portfolio brings significant value to their business.  Our research shows that PLM can get products into the market faster and more efficiently, increasing the speed of product launches by up to 55 percent and reducing operational and product development costs by 10–30 percent. PLM is also a critical lever for manufacturing companies to create profitable and sustainable business opportunities in customer service.”

Frank Riemensperger, country managing director for Accenture Germany, said that “Industry 4.0 concepts will dramatically increase the incidence of sensor-equipped materials and components along the manufacturing cycle.  These provide data and updates that allow companies to further optimize production and become more flexible, complimenting PLM-driven activities around increased efficiency and reduced time-to-market… The engineering lifecycle of products increasingly draws on a complex mix of mechanical, electrical and software elements, all of which require different development techniques. Truly understanding and managing dependencies and integration requires a robust set of PLM capabilities.”
