Software Defined Data Centers (SDDCs): Extending Virtualization to All Aspects of the Data Center
Software-Defined Data Centers (SDDC) is an extension of the concept of virtualization to include all infrastructure resources in a data center, like networking, storage, CPU and security.
Eric Grall, head of the digital data center at Atos called SDDCs “‘the third digital revolution — where IT finally provides infrastructure resources just when our customers need them.”
Jim Frey, vice president of research for hybrid cloud and infrastructure management at Enterprise Management Associates, said that “SDDCs let IT staffs more easily move applications and workloads around to accommodate mixed environments.”
By using software to configure and define data center architecture, large web businesses like Google and Facebook routinely morph their infrastructures to respond to changing demands on their services. Given the success that these huge web-based companies have had with SDDCs, smaller companies are looking to see if they can apply the same ideas at their scale to make themselves more nimble and responsive to their markets.
Richard Villars, vice president at IDC, recommends IT managers to use SDDCs to achieve three goals:
- Eliminate over provisioning and reduce total number of physical servers
- Streamline operational costs
- Reduce cost of migrations
