1470 developers and IT managers at the end of 2007 voted Oracle the best database across 13 different categories. Evans Data said that in 23 years of doing this survey never has one vendor been voted number one in all categories.

Five databases were considered, two Open Source (MySQL and PostgreSQL), and the rest commercial. Oracle topped the others with a score of 2,500; DB2, had 2,200; SQL Server, 2,000; MySQL, 1,800; Informix, 1,775; PostgreSQL, 1,750; Sybase, 1,600.

The features/categories that were considered included:

  • Performance (speed)
  • Security
  • Scalability
  • Atomicity
  • Consistency
  • Isolation of transactions
  • Durability of transactions
  • Quality of data modeling tools
  • Support for XML
  • Multi platform support
  • Quality of management tools
  • Quality of available third party management tools
  • Programming language support

It is interesting to note that in two categories, performance and multi-platform support, MySQL beat out SQL Server. MySQL stumbled in areas of perceived scalability, handling XML data, and in quality of data modeling and management tools.
