Structured Data: Traditional RDBMS Databases Still Rule Data Management

By Dick Weisinger

A recent report by Dell finds that structured and transactional data remains as some of the most highly valued data managed by businesses.

The Dell report found that “although advancements in the ability to capture, store, retrieve and analyze new forms of unstructured data have garnered significant attention, …most organizations continue to focus primarily on managing structured data, and will do so for the foreseeable future.”

John Whittaker, executive director of product marketing at Dell Software, said that “… successful information management is not just about managing big data or small data, but about managing all data – regardless of its size, type or location.  While big data and related technologies have garnered most of the hype, traditional structured data and RDBMS technologies continue to play an integral role in the data management strategies of organizations large and small.”

The main findings of the Dell report are:

  • Three-quarters of data actively being managed by organizations is structured
  • One-third of companies don’t even try to manage unstructured data
  • Businesses are slowly adopting technologies like Hadoop and NoSQL
  • New analytic techniques are driving some businesses to adopting new DBMS software

It should be noted that the report focuses only on current business practice and doesn’t examine lost opportunities.  For example, although most of the data actively managed by organizations today continues to be structured, other reports find that the amount of unstructured data in organizations is greater than the amount of structured data.  What value is being lost by businesses that are not actively managing their unstructured data?
