Databases: Strong Movement from Commercial to Open Source
The future of databases is open source. Gartner predicts that within the next three years more than 70 percent of all new applications will be based on open source databases and that half of existing applications that are using commercial RDBMS software will have been migrated to open source.
Why are open source databases so attractive now? Two reasons are:
- Lower total-cost-of-ownership
- Growth in product maturity
The Gartner report, State of Open Source RDBMS, found that “Open-source RDBMSs have matured and today can be considered by information leaders, DBAs and application development management as a standard infrastructure choice for a large majority of new enterprise applications… An increasing proportion of third-party and in-house applications can be used on open-source RDBMSs, meaning DBAs and application development management can now use them to replace existing internal commercial RDBMSs… Information leaders who opt for an OSDBMS licensing model can benefit from much lower costs than using a commercial model, even with today’s hosted cloud and dbPaaS offerings.”
In particular, among open source databases, PostgreSQL is showing strong acceptance. 77 percent of all new applications being written are based on Postgres.
Marc Linster, senior vice president of products and services of EnterpriseDB, said that “Postgres is empowering organizations to transform the economics of IT. IT can invest in the customer engagement applications that differentiate their operations from their competition instead of continuing to pay the steep and rising licensing and support fees charged by traditional database vendors.”
