Software Defined Networking: Disillusionment With Current Technology
Software-Defined Networking (SDN) decouples physical infrastructure and lets network administrators control their network services with software.
While many believe that SDN represents the future of networking, Gartner’s recent networking hype cycle shows that at least currently SDN has run into a “trough of disillusionment”. “This is the result of too much marketecture, and not enough real-world implementations as we estimate there are under 2,000 production SDN enterprise deployments. Maybe next year it starts up the slope of enlightenment,” says Gartner’s network analyst Andrew Lerner.
Gartner analyst Joe Skorupa responded to the question frequently asked Gartner: “When will you publish an SDN Magic Quadrant?” He said that “the simple answer is: We won’t, because SDN and NFV (Network Function Virtualization) aren’t markets. They are an architectural approach and a deployment option, respectively… We do realize that other firms have published reports on the 186 quadrillion bitcoin market for SDN and NFV. However, market forecasts predict the revenues generated by the sale of goods and services and SDN is an architectural approach. “
