SOA: An Architectural Foundation of Re-usability and Scalability

By Dick Weisinger

The Services Oriented Architecture (SOA) market size was $5.7 billion in 2013 and is expected to grow to $15.1 billion in 2019 and reach $16.4 billion in 2020, based on a report by Winter Green Research.  Driving much of the growth is mobile devices, social media and cloud computing.

SOA is an architecture used in IT where reusable logic that could be commonly used by many applications is broken down into units of code that are implemented as a service.  Each service performs a single self-contained operation or function, like validating a user, or looking up a specific piece of information.  Composite applications are then built up using those primary services.

The Winter Green report estimates that nearly 15,000 enterprises globally, primarily mid-sized companies with revenues between $300 million and $2 billion,  are implementing SOA solutions.

Elaine Myrback, said that “Service Oriented Architecture represents a new standard that assists the overall architecture that’s been designed to be replicate-able and reusable, and it begins to have a payback as you develop those web services within that architecture… So it doesn’t save you money your first 12 months. After your first couple of years, you’ll start seeing that your upgrades are easier, there’s less customization, there’s less cost, and less maintenance and you can utilize and facilitate the business more appropriately utilizing SOA… The wins? They are most always in the user front end, where you can get creative and combine traditionally siloed data or simply put a new face on a traditional back-end providing improved usability or intuitiveness. ”
