Health Care: Providers Up Their Investment in Security, Analytics and the Cloud

By Dick Weisinger

IT budgets for health care providers are showing healthy growth, according to the IDC Healthcare provider Technology report.  Three-quarters of the providers that are spending more say that some part of that extra spend is due to setting up electronic health records (EHR).  But that’s not the only source of higher IT healthcare spending by providers.  They’re also spending on accountable care, analytics and care management.

Analytics is seeing huge growth, such as for systems that can analyze provider and care team performance, referral patterns and financial analytics.

For security, healthcare providers are focusing on cloud security, environment monitoring and controlling shadow IT.

Much of the new IT spend by healthcare is on new technologies.  SaaS, Cloud, analytics, managed hosting and mobile items account for nearly half of new spending dollars.  The remaining new spend is going towards on-premise systems.
