SaaS: The fine line of "Cloud Computing"
What does “cloud computing” mean to you? The people at Gartner say that there are two popularly accepted definitions for cloud computing, and if you’re not on the same wavelength, you easily can misunderstand or be misunderstood.
The most prevalent definition of Cloud Computing has to do with interacting with web-based services that live somewhere external to your hosting facilities. The definition applies to applications (like CRM), storage services, computing services, and business processes.
Another definition of Cloud Computing which has been bandied about touches more on the idea of vitualization and automation. Here the focus is on underlying technologies that enable services.
Gartner points out that the two definitions are connected, but distinct. One view is a view of cloud computing and cloud computing services and the other is one of underlying cloud computing technologies. Cloud computing service vendors will typically take advantage of technology like virtualization to deliver their services.
Typically a vendor of cloud computing services will use virtualization technologies to deliver their service.
