It’s only been a year or two since I commented that Analyst reports often overlooked or omitted software reviews for open source products.  MySQL, for example, was frequently overlooked in the roundup analysis for database market share.

Those days appear to be over.  In a recent report from Gartner, Open Source database software is singled out as a major force.  The report found that open-source database usage grew 50 percent in 2008 — now 73 percent of enterprises are estimated to be using some amount of open-source databases.

But not only more people are using open-source databases.  Open-Source vendors and organizations are getting 42.4 percent more revenue in 2008 for their product.

Finally, Gartner predicts the market for Open Source will exceed $1 billion by 2013.
