Automation: Forrester Forecasts Automation to Pick up Speed in Job Displacement during 2018
Global automation of common business tasks is expected to pick up steam in 2018, according to Forrester Research analyst Chris Gardner. Forrester predicts that as much as 9 percent of the US workforce this year will be eliminated by automation which would be offset only by a 2 percent increase of new jobs created to support the new “automation economy”. The report finds that much of the push for automation stems from a demand by customers to be able to receive personalized assistance at any time from anywhere. While automation is sure to evolve throughout 2018, an estimate of 7-9 percent job loss over just twelve months as a result of new technology seems very high.
Robotic Process Automation (RPA) is one large component of the trend towards automation. Forrester says that bots will be deployed in 2018 to displace more than one half million office, administrative and sales-related positions. As a result, the RPA software market will double and exceed $1 billion by the end of the year.
Forrester said to expect a political struggle to develop over automation and job displacement. Gardner wrote in an article that summarized Forrester research findings that “as people become more and more engaged with customer service automation like kiosks and robots, there will be hesitation and, in some cases, resentment over change. However, enterprises and political organizations will reexamine change management procedures and reorient PR to navigate these waters. Automation will eventually win out because its societal and economic benefit will outweigh political resistance.”
Worldwide use of robotic process automation has led to significant, positive impacts on business productivity. In 2017 the adoption of robotic process automation grew globally at a higher pace than ever before. Extrapolating RPA’s growth trajectory into the near future would imply adoption as a necessary step that competitive businesses must take. According to the Institute for Robotic Process Automation and Artificial Intelligence Survey from June 2017, 66% of respondents were considering expansion of robotic process automation programs and 70% were allocating increased funds for investment in 2018.
