Supply Chain: Technology to Enable More Efficient Logistics

By Dick Weisinger

Digitalization is affecting all industries. Supply chain planning and fulfillment is one area that is beginning to see the changes. Digital methods are increasingly being used by manufacturers, distributors and retailers to become more efficient.  A survey by Gartner found that 65 percent of supply chain professions think that the key to competitive advantage in the supply chain is better technology.

C. Dwight Klappich, research vice president at Gartner, said that “there is no doubt that deploying innovative technology can improve efficiency and customer service, and can help raise maturity and transform supply chains. For example, 90% of companies operating at stages four or five maturity levels outperform their peers, and many are considered industry leaders.”

IDC recently released some trends in supply chain management that they are forecasting for the next few years.  These include:

  • One-third of manufacturing supply chains will be using analytics-driven cognitive methodologies by 2020.
  • Half of manufacturers will be using analytics, IoT and social collaboration for enterprise planning by the end of 2018
  • 60 percent of manufacturers will aggregate supply chain data for use with analytics to improve the accuracy of fulfillment by 2021
  • 80 percent of supply-chain interactions will use cloud-based networks to improve resiliency by 2019
  • One-third of manufacturers will use blockchain to improve delivered product quality by 2021
  • Robotics will be used in half of fulfillment centers with 30 percent gains in productivity by 2019
  • Cybersecurity will be more important than physical security for half of manufacturers by the end of 2019
