RPA: Process Automation Taking Aim at Repetitive Tasks
Robotic Process Automation (RPA), the transformation of existing processes performed by humans, generally repetitive and simple, into an automated digital process that requires little or no oversight or input.
Businesses are increasingly adopting RPA. Forrester estimates the RPA market will grow to nearly $3 billion by 2021. Acumen Research and Consulting estimates RPA to grow to $4.6 billion by 2026.
Businesses choose to adopt RPA because it enables cost reduction, increases productivity, and fits into strategic digital transformation.
Dorothy Aronson, National Science Foundation CIO, said that “people who have the business knowledge and understand what repetitive tasks they have should be able to use the software … to simplify their own daily work, to move away from those repetitive tasks and actually do more strategic thinking.”
John Lockwood, RPA program manager in DLA Information Operations, told FCW that “from imaging laptops to configuring servers, from onboarding employees to password resets, any activity that is structured work with well-defined business rules is a potential candidate for RPA.”
