IT Infrastructure: Pandemic Spurs Businesses to Bulk up on IT Infrastructure

By Dick Weisinger

Three-quarters of global organization say that they’re increasing budgets for IT infrastructure in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, based on a survey by Wipro.

Wipro cites the large shift to remote workers and change in chanel preferences as causes for infrastructure retooling. 80 percent of businesses are reskilling their IT staff to better address changes to the infrastructure.

The Wipro report found that ““IT infrastructure in 2020 has the potential for seminal transformation. Emerging digital technologies and processes such as automation, Artificial Intelligence (AI), 5G, IoT, edge and ambient computing, DevOps, AIOps, and crowdsourcing are firing a new wave of innovation. The COVID-19 lockdown and the ability of their IT to respond to the emerging situation was a reality check for many organizations; similar organizations operating in the same industry were faced with vastly different grades of challenges.”

Perry Toone, Founder of Thexyz.com, commented on how IT usage changed for his business after Covid 19: “We’ve seen incredible increases in DNS queries, server load, and general strain on our resources. Many users who usually use an email client are now using our Webmail app and mobile applications. We have over 70% increase in logins to Webmail over the past 2 weeks.”

The Wipro report also found that more than 40 percent of IT infrastructure budgets are allocated for business transformation. Businesses are hoping that technology will lead the way to innovation.
