IT Management: CIO HatRacks OverFlow

By Dick Weisinger

CIOs are continuing to face an evolving role as technology and business organizations change.

LaVerne H. Council of advisory services firm Grant Thornton, said that “today’s CIOs understand that the role of the IT organization is more than a back-office cost center responsible for keeping systems running and reporting run times. IT organizations are a critical component of developing and executing business strategy.”

According to a report by Grant Thornton, today’s CIOs need not only to understand technology, they must also excel at being strategists, communicators, business relationship managers, and change managers.

The report concludes that “In a time of near constant disruption, CIOs must clearly demonstrate the value of IT in business terms, reconcile conflicting priorities, build relationships with their peers, and fully align IT and business strategy to drive value to shareholders and customers. Indeed, the role of the CIO has expanded far beyond information technology or mere systems integrity to include security and transformative customer-focused business strategies. This requires CIOs to take on a new mantle – that of trusted partner. “
