IT Spending: Global Government Spending Reaches $438 Billion

By Dick Weisinger

Global spending by governments is expended to be flat or decline slightly this year because of the impact from COVID-19, according to a report by Gartner. Spending is expected to slowly pick up in 2021 with growth rates on the order of around 3 percent.

The only segment of IT government spending that has seen any growth this year has been Software sales where growth rates have been greater than 4 percent.

Irma Fabular, senior research director at Gartner, said that “government organizations are accelerating IT spending on digital public services, public health, social services, education, and workforce reskilling in support of individuals, families and businesses that are heavily impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.”
