Mobile App Development: Despite the Trend to Mobile, Business Developers Still Focus on the Desktop

By Dick Weisinger

Apple has more than a million apps on the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch and they report that customers spent $10 billion on apps in 2013.  That’s not to mention the app stores of competing mobile platforms.

It would seem that the world of development today is centered on mobile.  But just to the contrary, a recent survey of developers found that 93 percent of them say that the desktop is still their number one focus.  And 51 percent of developers have never even been involved in any sort of mobile app development.  That’s the result of a survey by the developer tool vendor Telerik.  While business executives single out mobile apps as a top priority for their business, developers at those same businesses have been slow to make a move in that direction.

The conclusions from the Telerik report are:

  • The widespread use of mobile technologies across businesses is taking longer than expected
  • Most development teams aren’t working closely with their users to find out their requirements and preferred way to access and interact with apps
  • The majority of developers who are developing mobile apps are using native mobile technologies rather than cross-platform tools
