Open Data: Use of Government Open Data Promotes Innovation

By Dick Weisinger

What has been the effect of the use of Open Data by governments?  A new report from the Center for Open Data Enterprise and the Open Data for Development Network examined the use of Open Data by 87 different countries.

Findings from the report include:

  • Developed, high-income countries are more likely to use Open Data
  • The four main uses of open data are:
    • organizational optimization
    • new products and services
    • advocacy
    • research and consulting
  • Open data is predominantly used in open data product and services by data, IT and geospatial companies.
  • The five main business sectors using open data are: agriculture, data and IT businesses, governance, healthcare, and housing and real estate

The report found that “the demand for government data provides a compelling rationale for growing open data programs and helping prioritize the most important datasets based on a user perspective.”
