PLM: A New Vision of Data Management

By Dick Weisinger

PLM is changing. And the change is affecting how people in companies work. No longer is PLM relegated to managing only inter-relationships of very complex CAD product drawings. PLM is being deployed in a variety of new ways throughout the company and often even being accessible to customers, partners, vendors, and suppliers outside of the company.

Much of the change has been brought about by the merging of collaboration tools into PLM and the shift to allow access to PLM system with browsers. The world of PLM has been opened to a much broader audience than ever before, and those people are now able to interact with and to comment and collaborate with others about that data. PLM is the technology that enables the model interaction, and it does it in a black-box way so that most people need not understand what is happening behind the scenes in terms of the data model management.

One of the biggest groups touched by the new world of PLM are consumers. This group had previously been virtually locked out of ever getting design documents. Now consumers might be able to see and interact with a virtual model of a product via the internet. Consumers can preview products before buying, and they can also seek and get visual information and instructions about how to assemble or troubleshoot products. They can even drill deeper by getting involved in the design process offer design suggestions and in somecases provide new designs.

PLM is radically changing whole markets and it is changing the way that we communicate.
