SaaS: Oracle's move into On-Demand / Oracle 11g RDBMS

By Dick Weisinger

Oracle Open World  The numbers coming out of this week’s Oracle OpenWorld show here in San Francisco have been huge.  42,000 attendees.  Attendees from 120 different countries.  400 demos on the conference floor.  482 new features in the upcoming Oracle 11g RDBMS.  (See slide 18 of Oracle Executive Vice President Chuck Rozwat’s Keynote presentation.)  Tourism resulting from the conference is expected to add $60 million to the San Francisco economy.

The new 11g datgabase, now in beta, is expected to include enhancements for security and to allow segregation between application users and the database that feeds the applications.

On Monday Charles Phillips outlined the Oracle strategy to create a complete technology stack. He suggested a much tighter integration between Oracle’s database, middleware components and applic applications.   But it isn’t clear what that would mean for applications using IBM’s DB2.

While much of the hype and emphasis at this year’s show is on traditional applications, Oracle’s On-Demand is moving forward too.  Oracle announced general availability of the PeopleSoft Enterprise On Demand and On Demand for Siebel CRM.  PeopleSoft Enterprise on Demand has features for managing data related to finance, IT, procurement, marketing, services and sales.  On Demand for Siebel CRM offers enhanced verticals and will now run on Linux.  Oracle has one and a quarter million users of its on-demand products.

Larry Ellison will be up later this afternoon to talk more about the 11g database strategy.

Formtek is an Oracle partner.
