SOA: Top Drivers for SOA adoption

By Dick Weisinger

The results of a survey taken in October 2006 by Hurwitz and Associates shows the following four items as top reasons why companies are undertaking SOA initiatives:

  • Reuse of software services across the enterprise
  • Business Flexibility
  • Ease of Integration
  • Speed of Integration

But while software reuse is cited as a top reason for creating Web Services within an SOA environment, the survey notes that reuse is often difficult because enterprise communication of available services isn’t happening.  47% of those surveyed had some dissatisfaction with their current implementations.

Less than 50% of those surveyed who are actively creating Web Services are also using UDDI or some sort of service registry.  Reuse was also hampered by lack of planning and not clearly articulated business goals.

The survey included 99 IT executives from companies in the United States and UK with more than 250 employees who were interested in SOA and Web Services.  They called these companies the SOA “journeyers”.  Of these 66% had begun an implementation of SAO.

The survey and report was sponsored by Mindreef, maker of SOA and Web Service products.  A complete copy of the report is available from Mindreef.
