SOA: Web Services in a Nutshell

By Dick Weisinger

Stefan Tilkov of InnoQ, a German services company with expertise in Software architecture related to SOA, Web Services, SOAP, WSDL, UDDI and XML, has created a vendor-neutral poster showing a matrix of Web Services Standards.

Web Services Poster

The poster isa useful collection of more than 60 WS-* standards and specifications.  One caveat though is that it treats all entries equally — it doesn’t address the quality or acceptance of the standard, and because of that, the picture that it provides may be a little distorted.

For each entry, the poster lists a brief description, the current status, version, and list of contributors.  The standards are categorized and color coded into groups that include XML, messaging, metadata, reliability, security, transactions, resources, business processes, management, presentation and interoperability.

The overview poster is great for pointing out what’s available and provides a good starting point for further research.
