Supply Chain Trends: Technology to Slowly Drive Change

By Dick Weisinger

Advanced technologies are impacting the operation of supply chains.

Christian Titze, vice president analyst with the Gartner Supply Chain Practice, said that “the vast majority of organizations have a cautious approach to adopting supply chain applications and technologies. Only 21% are willing to consider, and often adopt, early-stage technologies. However, even cautious supply chain leaders must keep an open mind and embrace long-term perpetual change.”

Some of the technologies that Gartner sees impacting supply chain operations arelisted below. The technologies often are synergistic and inter-connected.

  • Hyperautomation – end-to-end automation enabled by technologies like RPA, machine learning and artificial intelligence
  • Digital Supply Chain Twin (DSCT) – A digital/virtual simulation of the supply chain that enables modeling to achieve cost and value optimization.
  • Continuous Intelligence – Real-time analysis and analytics of event data to better manage inventory, logistics and costs.
  • Governance and Security – Minimizes risks of supply chain, logistics and transportation. Incorporates regulatory and customs information.
  • Edge Computing and Analytics – The processing and analyzing of data in a network that is closest to the point of collection.
  • Artificial Intelligence – Helps supply chain managers improve data handling and governance.
  • 5G Networks – Improves data transmission sand processing speeds. Enables real-time visibility of operations.
  • Immersive Experience – Improves training of new factory workers and helps providing on-the-job information and instructions.
