Technology: IBM tops Application Servers

By Dick Weisinger

Which Web Application server do developers prefer for deploying their web-based applications?  IBM’s WebSphere ranks number one.  The big loser was WebLogic which dropped from number one to seven.

Evans Data Corp did the survey and tries to weight survey responses around performance, support, usability and quality.  WebSphere was considered to be the most scalable and best supported.  In second place was Apache Geronimo (actually IBM offers Geronimo as a WebSphere Community Edition).

Windows Server was third.  ColdFusion was fourth.  And JBoss was fifth.  For JBoss, people complained about the management console and lack of integration features.

Interestingly at the bottom of the pack were Oracle’s WebLogic and SAP’s NetWeaver products.  WebLogic suffered from uncertainty about how it would fit into Oracle’s roadmap after Oracle acquired it.  For NetWeaver, users complained that using it for anything outside of the world of SAP was difficult.
