Open Source: Next generation Focuses on Data
First there was Open Source — for software. The next phase is about data — Open Data. And local, state and federal grovernments are setting the trend.
On the federal level, Obama is promoting the Open Government Directive. In January 300 “high-value” data sets were released for use on the data.gov web site. The type of data in cludes census data on farm operators, state-level energy usage by economic sector, bank bailout data, avaition accident statistics, and others.
Not to be outdone, the UK has also launched its own Open Data site at data.gov.uk. The site was created by Sir Tim Berners-Lee, an inventor of some of the concepts behind the internet. The UK portal contains almost three times the number of data sets that are on the US site.
Other countries have followed the lead. New Zealand has an Open Data site. Northern Ireland has one too.
San Francisco has released data sets around their city at datasf.org. New York City has launched the NYC Data Mine.
Developers are excited at the release of these public data sets and are planning to build applications and mashups around them. New York city started a contest with $20,000 in prizes around who can make the most innovative web application based on Open Data.
