3D Printing: Industrial Manufacturing to be Transformed by Additive Manufacturing

By Dick Weisinger

The use of 3D printing is expected to grow dramatically over the next years, particularly in the areas of industrial manufacturing and healthcare.

Gartner identified 3D printing as a top ten strategic technology in 2016.  David Cearley, Gartner vice president, said that “3D printing will see a steady expansion over the next 20 years of the materials that can be printed, improvement in the speed with which items can be printed and emergence of new models to print and assemble composite parts.”

By 2020, Gartner predicts the following will have occurred within the 3D printing industry:

  • Robotic 3D printers will be used in the manufacturing processes for 10 percent of industrial operations
  • 3D printers will be used at healthcare facilities to create 30 percent of implants and internal medical devices
  • Timelines for the introduction of new products will be slashed by 25 percent because of the use of 3D printers
  • 3D-printed tools, like jigs and fixtures, will be routinely used in 75 percent of manufacturing operations for producing finished goods.

The Gartner report found that “the number of iterations enabled by rapid and iterative prototyping results in short new-product development time, lower development costs and fewer finished goods defects.”
