Document Archival for Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery
A Software Information Lifecycle Management survey by UK-based BridgeHead found that Compliance ranked third as a driver for document archival. First on the list was BC/DR Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery. Second was ‘Data Growth’.
70% of respondents cited Disaster Recovery as the top reason for their archiving initiative. 62% cited ‘Data Growth’, and 58% cited ‘Reculatory Compliance’. The survey was taken in July 2006 of 350 senior executives, IT managers and system and network engineers in North America and UK.
But on closer examination of the results, many of the respondents may have been equating archival with backup. A follow-up question determined that 72% of respondents in the UK and 77% of US respondents use tape as their archive medium. 48% use magnetic disk and 26% use optical.
Yesterday’s blog discussed confusion among many in differentiating between the terms Backup and Archival. The way the survey was worded may only continue to propogate the confusion. Tape is a medium well suited for backups, but is difficult to use as part of a data archiving system that needs to be able to support search. Trying to find specific data stored on tape can be a very tedious process. Data archival based teamed with a responsive storage media allows a more granular-level data search.
