Storage: Storage Management Still 'A Work In Progress'
Phillip Sargeant, an analyst with Gartner, is calling storage management from today’s vendors as still ‘a work in progress‘, adding that systems are not ‘as mature as they could be’. Sargeant said that collaborative applications, Web 2.0 and unstructured data is causing organizations to see a 60 percent annual growth in their storage needs.
Needing to manage more of something generally equates to more complexity. Sargeant said that today’s storage solutions are struggling to keep pace, and without change will fall behind future storage needs. Part of the problem is that today’s tools still require many manual steps, and a lack of good data storage professionals today makes it a painful problem. The tools need to be simplified if storage is to be managed well by ‘generalist IT staff’.
“I have been to many organizations where storage is a part-time job,” Sargeant said. “You cannot afford to do that.” He argued that in today’s environment that companies need storage specialists on staff that are able to negotiate with vendors and to be able to help companies improve their organizational storage processes. Sargeant emphasized that improving the process was more important than worrying about the underlying storage technologies used.
