Chip Technology: Nvidia Bypasses Intel

By Dick Weisinger

Nvidia’s value on NASDAQ bypassed Intel this past week. The market cap of Nvidia surged past Intel to $251 billion, compared to Intel’s $248 billion. Over the last year Nvidia’s stock has increased by more than 70 percent. Interesting because Nvidia doesn’t even manufacture it’s own chips.

It’s all about perceived value though. Nvidia’s revenue is only $10.9 billion compared to Intel’s $72 billion.

Can it last for Nvidia? Maybe not. Nvidia pioneered the GPU which took it into not only video gaming, but also areas like cryptocurrency mining, supercomputing, data centers, the internet of things and artificial intelligence.

But the next generation of AI chips will likely not be new generations of GPU chips. Cryptocurrency mining and gaming are currently in a downturn. The future looks more like it may be one of increased competition and lower profits.
