Supercapacitors: Possible Successor to Today’s Costly and Slow-Charging Batteries
Batteries have become sore points with products like electric cars and portable electronics. Batteries still are expensive, bulky and slow to charge.
An alternative to batteries that is showing promise is supercapacitors. They tend to be smaller than batteries and can recharge much more quickly and more safely.
IdTechX, a market research company, predicts that within the next twenty years supercapacitors will overtake batteries like lithium-ion. Electric motors will replace internal combustion engines.
Verified Market Research estimates the supercapacitor market to be about $1 billion in 2018 and will grow to more than $8 billion by 2026.
Auto analyst Egil Juliussen, said that “the good news about capacitors is, you can charge them really fast because you just dump the current in there and all of a sudden it’s there. Supercapacitor improvement and market roll-out is now moving fast, and there will be major advances and disruptions coming in the next twenty years.”
