Quantum Computing: A Revolution in Computing

Encryption as we know it is destined for obsolescence over the next decade.

The World Economic Forum said that “the sheer calculating ability of a sufficiently powerful and error-corrected quantum computer means that public-key cryptography is ‘destined to fail,’ and would put the technology used to protect many of today’s fundamental digital systems and activities at risk.”

But encryption is just one area that will be affected. Quantum Computing has the potential to revolutionize all aspects of computing.

Mohammad Choucair, CEO at Archer, said that “Quantum computing represents the next generation of powerful computing, you don’t really have to know how your phone works on the inside, you just want it to do things that you couldn’t do before. And with quantum computing, you can do things that you couldn’t necessarily do before.”

Ivan Ostojic, partner at consultant McKinsey, said that “in principle, quantum will be relevant for all CIOs as it will accelerate solutions to a large range of problems. Those companies need to become owners of quantum capability.” Industry sectors expected to benefit from quantum computing include chemistry, oil and gas, transportation, logistics, banking and cybersecurity.

Robert Sutor, vice president at IBM, said that “we’re not looking for quantum to be slightly better. We’re looking for quantum to be really better.”
