Data: Unprecedented Volumes and Speed of Creation
For better or worse, we’ve become a data-centric society. Analyst firm IDC and Business Cloud company Domo have annual surveys that estimate the amount of data we create, where it is stored, and how we use it. The IDC report tends to be more macro in view while the view from Domo is more specific to the use of cloud computing, particularly data created by cloud services, like NetFlix and Facebook, and presents the numbers in different units, like the number of Twitter posts or Google searches.
Dave Reinsel, senior vice president, IDC, said that “in 2020, 64.2ZB of data was created or replicated, defying the systemic downward pressure asserted by the COVID-19 pandemic on many industries and its impact will be felt for several years. The amount of digital data created over the next five years will be greater than twice the amount of data created since the advent of digital storage. The question is: How much of it should be stored?”
IDC sees the following areas as driving huge growth in the amount of data that is collected and stored:
- Internet of Things (IoT) data
- Data stored to the cloud
- Data creation with Edge Computing
