Semiconductors: Samsung Vies with TSMC for 3nm Chip Production
3nm chips will be in production soon. Samsung announced they have begun production of 3nm chips and plan to scale up production later in the year. TSMC is also planning the production of 3nm chips later this year. 3nm chips will be especially useful for high-performance and low-power computing. The new chips are expected to reduce power consumption by 45 percent and improve performance by 23 percent.
“3 nanometer” doesn’t correspond directly to the size of any of the transistor components on the chip. It is a marketing term that refers to the latest technology for manufacturing and describes the technology used for increasing chip transistor density.
Samsung is in competition with Taiwan’s TSMC and seeks to one-up them by being the first to produce 3nm technology. TSMC is the current market leader by a wide distance for providing chips for Apple products. The 3nm chips may also be produced in 2024 at a new facility in Texas, yet to be opened. Intel has said that they plan to 3nm production in 2023.
TSMC’s roadmap is to begin production of 2nm technology in 2025, so Samsung needs to work hard to keep up with TSMC’s technology. Some also question the quality of the 3nm chips Samsung will be able to produce. Samsung’s 4nm production reported quality issues where only 35 percent of the chips met quality standards, far lower than chips produced by TMSC.
