Cloud Computing: From Idiocy to Indispensable

By Dick Weisinger

Over the last decade, cloud computing has gone from “idiocy” to “indispensable”.

In 2008, Larry Ellison, CEO of Oracle, said that “the interesting thing about cloud computing is that we’ve redefined cloud computing to include everything that we already do… The computer industry is the only industry that is more fashion-driven than women’s fashion. Maybe I’m an idiot, but I have no idea what anyone is talking about. What is it? It’s complete gibberish. It’s insane. When is this idiocy going to stop?

In 2021, Kurt Marko, writing for TechTarget, said that “Cloud computing has become indispensable for most households and businesses, and it was instrumental in minimizing the social disruption and economic destruction of lockdowns and restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic.”

What are the benefits of the cloud?

  • Flexibility, scalability, efficiency
  • Provides virtually unlimited scale-up capacity
  • The cloud is the default platform for innovations like cybersecurity, Big Data, IoT, AI, and ML
  • Simplifies backup-up, restore, and disaster recovery
  • Reliability and high uptime capability
  • Reduces business and regulatory risk
  • Promotes and supports mobile usage
  • Improves collaboration, file and data sharing
  • Helps achieve environmental sustainability
  • With oversight, can be competitively priced, and often is significantly lower cost than on-premise
