Social Media: Explosive Growth on Mobile Devices
In the last few years whenever I talk about the growth of content, I roll out adjectives like ‘huge’, ‘exponential’, and ‘explosive’. While I picked ‘explosive’ for today’s headline, that may not really do justice to the actual numbers. Over the last year, the use of social media on mobile devices has increased 240 percent from the year before. That’s a pretty healthy jump.
The huge increase is being fueled both by the availability of content and also by increasingly sophistication in mobile devices. In April, 14.5 million people were using social networking applications from their mobiles. That’s about 20 percent of the total market of 73 million users in the US with mobile devices that support web browsers. The data was collected from a study by ComScore.
Among the content categories that saw the biggest growth, news topped out at 124 percent, followed by sports information at 113 percent, bank accounts at 113 percent, and weather at 111 percent. Roughly 5 million people are banking with mobile devices using dedicated applications while another 13.2 million users are accessing their bank accounts using a mobile browser.
