Storage: Strong Growth Heading into 2010
Storage sales from the first quarter of 2010 show strong growth. IDC reports that the quarterly disk storage market sales were $6.7 billion. That’s up 18 percent from sales in the first quarter of 2009. IDC is counting both internal and external server disk and also solid-state disks, the flash-based alternative being used in some storage systems. The total number of storage bytes shipped in the quarter totalled 3397 petabytes.
One interesting fact in the numbers is that compared to the fourth quarter of 2009 the first quarter sales dipped 7.8 percent. That may not sound good, but the change from fourth quarter to first quarter numbers tend to show a steep drop. End of year sales from budgets that need to be spent in the calendar year typically spike the results for the fourth quarter, and sales at the start of the year are typically hesitant as budgets for the year are just being allocated. The bottom of the storage market seems to have been in second quarter 2009.
Total results for top storage vendors are shown in the table below. EMC has grown it’s position as a market leader to 24.6% up from 21%. NetApp grew from 8.8% to 11.1%. NetApp saw a 47% sales growth in the first quarter.
