Green ECM: Saving Money and Trees with ECM
While white is the color of Christmas, today I’ve been thinking about how ECM is being associated more and more with the color green, as in “environmentally friendly” green. On the AIIM.org website, AIIM has created a sort of portal page dedicated to the discussion of “Green ECM“.
In what ways can ECM be “environment friendly”. Primarily, the use of digital documents can help reduce the costs related to paper consumption and the costs of shipping paper documents. The Green ECM AIIM site includes an ECM green calculator spreadsheet created by Oracle that can estimate ECM savings. The spreadsheet shows savings in terms of dollars, but also tries to estimate the number of “trees saved” and “barrels of oil saved”.
One estimate has it that if the United States could cut the amount of paper generated in the office place by 10 percent (estimated at about 540,000 tons of paper in 2007), that greenhouse gases would be 1.6 million tons less, which is the equivalent of taking 280,000 cars off of the highways.
