PLM: Enterprise Software Becoming More Usable and More Sociable
PLM vendors are doing their best to pivot their development paths and reinvent their software to incorporate better usability and more collaborative and social features. It’s been a challenge for them, but by the end of 2010, some signs of what the new direction will look like were beginning to appear. Among the major vendors, here are some of the projects that are in the works:
PTC Creo – A platform for creating design application. It will use a Common Data Model to more easily share across application boundaries. Creo will offer enhanced modeling capabilities, such as the ability to easily move back and forth between different kinds of modeling, such as 2D, 3D, conceptualization and cross-sectioning. It also intends to provide greater interoperability with data models created from other vendor software. PTC Creo has a goal of trying to be more approachable and usable by a wider audience than is possible with current PLM and CAD software.
Dassault Systèmes 3D Swym (See What You Mean) – Dassault has created an on-line community to enable better collaboration and sharing of ideas. Their goal is to create a tool that will improve the process of innovation. It has project-based features like Alfresco Share or Microsoft SharePoint and integrates some Facebook-like sharing features. It offers some common collaboration tools like sites, blogs, media sharing, and dynamic employee profiles, but it also includes 3D modeling tools. The product has been used with success internally at Dassault Systems with 8500 users.
