Cloud Computing: IT Managers are Adopting "Cloud Thinking"
CA Technologies has published their vendor-sponsored survey on cloud computing which documents how companies are picking up their pace in moving from traditional on-premise computing to cloud computing. The interesting thing about the report is the description of a new breed of IT managers that get “cloud thinking“. It is a shift in mindset that could lead to an even more dramatic move to a new paradigm for IT in the enterprise.
The report included the results of their cloud computing survey of IT professionals in organizations sized between 1000 and 10,000 employees:
- 80 percent of all companies, and 92 percent of the largest companies are using at least one cloud service
- 53 percent of companies are using at least 6 cloud computing services
- 44 percent of companies say that their primary motivator for moving services to the cloud has been cost savings
- 35 percent of IT staff say that they are more efficient when using cloud services
- 68 percent of IT executives are concerned about cloud security
- 40 percent of IT executives say that they worry about loss of control and the possibility of losing their own jobs
- Organizations that are heavy users of virtualization technology internally are four times more likely to consider adopting cloud services
- 75 percent of the cloud applications being used can be classified as collaboration applications, like email and web conferencing.
- 58 percent of companies are using cloud computing as platform or infrastructure-as-a-service.
The report attributes much of the switch in thinking about the cloud to the success that many companies have had using virtualization internally. As many as one-third of all servers in organizations are running virtualized environments, and as many as one half are planning to move mission-critical applications from non-virtualized infrastructure to virtualized machines.
