Where did the 2010 Enterprise IT budget dollars go? Forrester has
done an analysis of IT spending in 2010.
In terms of new initiatives versus old, the bulk of IT spending typically goes toward maintaining the existing infrastructure:
53 percent went towards Maintaining and Operating the Organization, Systems and Equipment (MOOSE)
29 percent went towards new initiatives
18 percent went to allocate expansion of capacity to support growth
In terms of spending categories, IT budgets in 2010 were allocated as follows:
32 percent went to pay full-time IT staff salaries
19 percent went to pay for software
18 percent was spent on hardware and infrastructure purchases
13.8 percent went on third-party IT services
13.1 percent was spent on telecom and network services
The five key objectives for IT in 2011 are as follows:
- Consolidation of IT infrastructure
- Upgrade capabilities to better handle disaster recovery and business continuity
- Enable better use and integration of mobile technologies by employees and customers
- Upgrade security
- Implement and improve collaboration
