Technology: Companies Struggle to Keep Up with Change

By Dick Weisinger

Technology changes are happening too quickly for many companies to keep up.  New technology is revolutionizing just about every industry and profession, from media and journalism to engineering and manufacturing.  61 percent of IT managers say that they struggle to keep up with new technologies, based on a survey from UK IT services company Equanet.   Nearly two-thirds of IT managers say that both Virtualization and Mobile technologies are two areas that they need to have a better grip on than they currently do.

  • 44 percent of IT managers say that they lack the right skills to address virtualization issues.
  • 38 percent say that they need to have a better understanding of cloud computing

IT managers say that both they and their staff need to be continually re-trained in order to keep up, but most companies aren’t able to afford the costs of training.  Interestingly, as many as 81 percent of IT managers say that they frequently encounter technology issues which they’d be better able to address had they had moire training under their belt.  Actually, only 4 percent of IT managers say that they are fully confident that they can handle any kind of technology question or problem that comes their way.

The Equanet report found that IT downtime cause businesses to lose, on average, 7.5 working days per year, and the report argues that some of that downtime could have been prevented had the IT staff been better trained and prepared to address technology issues.
