Technology: Top 10 IT Challenges over the Next Five Years
Gartner has released its list of top ten things that are sure to keep IT managers awake at night over the next five years, as presented at Gartner’s 2011 annual Symposium/ITxpo in Orlando by David Cappuccio, a Gartner analyst.
- Vitualization will continue to expand. Increasingly desktop virtualization will become deployed to enable better control of the desktop computing environment.
- Big data, patterns and analytics.
- Greater energy efficiency in devices and more monitoring of energy consumption.
- Increasingly more targeted content, for application data and advertising.
Applications will increasingly factor in known data about the user to target the data delivered.
Data will become more context and location aware of the user. - Changing workforce mindset. The turbulent economy increasingly has diminished employee company loyalty.
Workers are more loyal to themselves and to their career, and job changes, especially among younger workers is more common. - Social networking. IT must and adopt to and include it as part of overall strategy.
- Tablets and consumerized applications will be more tightly integrated into environments.
- Server density. Ever-increasing bigger and more densely packed data centers.
- Cloud computing increasingly will turn the role of IT into a service delivery team.
- Fabric computing will become a reality, the integration of server, storage and network systems and components to create what Gartner calls ‘resource pools’
