Collaboration: Mobile Computing Still Can't Match the Office Experience
It wasn’t that long ago when remote computing was limited to phone calls using ‘dumbphones’. Well, mobile/remote computing has improved considerably over a short period of time. But while laptops and smartphones have made mobile collaboration significantly easier, there is still a big gap between the productivity possible when work is done in the office versus when it is done on the road.
For example, a study by collaboration company harmon.ie found that 84 percent of executives say that they can’t collaborate effectively when on the road.
Yaacov Cohen, Harmon.ie CEO, said that “We live in an era of what we call BYOD and with that comes the expectation that every important application and document will be available while walking around with an iPad or smartphone… The reality? Not so much.”
In addition, the harnon.ie survey found that:
- 54 percent of workers reported lower productivity when working remotely compared to when working in the office
- 43 percent of workers said that they often can’t access key information to complete a project when working remotely
- 38 percent say that they miss business opportunities because of poor mobile collaboration
- 41 percent say that working remotely forces they to work off of potentially out-dated documents
- 50 percent say that they can’t get input from their colleagues in a timely manner
