Security: Data Breaches More Often a Result of Workers' Negligence Than External Hackers
A recent Forrester report finds that just 56 percent of workers have any idea about what their company policy is regarding computer security. The report found that only 25 percent of security breach cases are the result of attacks initiated external to the company. Far more common, are actually incidents that are caused by employee negligence.
Heidi Shey, author of the Forrester report, said that “Whether their actions are intentional or unintentional, insiders cause their fair share of breaches. Other common sources of breach include loss or theft of corporate assets, such as laptops or USB drives, and external attacks that target corporate servers or users.”
The report also looked at the types of data involved in data breaches and found the following breakdown:
- 22 percent of cases involve employee or customer personal data
- 19 percent of cases involve loss of intellectual property
- 11 percent of cases involve the loss of user credential and login information
The report also found concern about the security of mobile devices. 39 percent say that they worry about data being intercepted from the mobile device. Roughly half worry that their mobile device will be lost or stolen. And 25 percent say that they have not installed any security protection on their mobile devices.
